A clifftop walk to St. Aldhelm’s Head and West Dorset’s most stunning views
After passing through Worth Matravers village, you’ll know you’re on the right track to St. Aldhelm’s Head once you’ve crossed the field, hopped over the style and seen that view.
With your eyes immediately drawn west, you’ll spy a span of West Dorset’s cliff line from this, the southerly most tip of the lovely Purbecks.
It’s all Jurassic coastline territory, so not only is it madly brilliant to look at, it’s also steeped in artefacts from an ancient world (making it great for some wild story telling as you trundle along the footpath).
Following the path that has Chapman’s Pool to your right (another local gem), you’ll be led to the infamous steps. It’s one of my favourite things to veer slightly off the path just before this point, plonk myself down (it’s that lovely, bouncy sort of grass there) and have a lazy tin mugged cuppa.
Trust me, you’ll need the fuel. There are some pretty mega steps that take you down and up a little valley before reaching the famous chapel that sits at the top of St. Aldhelm’s head as a sort of silent beacon. Me and my sister like taking the steps in bursting sprints, but whatever puff and muster it takes to get you up them is absolutely worth it for the view!
The chapel that greets you at the top, alongside some luckily positioned cottages and a cracking bench for wistful chats with your best ones, is worth a tour too. It’s a Norman building, tiny and spectacularly perched, and a marker that this little round route is nearing its end.
